Ingredient Superstar: Jojoba Oil

Have you ever heard about my favorite oil to include in products?  It's called jojoba oil (pronounced HO-HO-ba).  Jojoba oil comes from the seed of the jojoba tree (Simmondsia chinenis), which is native to Mexico, southern Arizona, and southern California.  Why do I love jojoba oil?  Because it has amazing skin benefits!

Technically speaking, jojoba oil isn't actually an oil at all.  Its chemical make-up is not triglycerides like other oils.  The chemical make-up of jojoba oil is actually a long string of monounsaturated liquid wax esters.  Now don't worry if you are not an organic chemist and that means nothing to you.  The take-away is that jojoba oil is actually remarkably similar to human sebum.

Jojoba oil is a very safe oil that is non-irritating so it can be used on sensitive skin around the eyes.  It also is non-allergenic, meaning it does not cause allergic reactions, and it is non-comedognic, meaning it will not clog your pores.

Jojoba oil is readily absorbed into the skin and does not leave a greasy feeling.  With the additional benefits of not clogging pores or causing irritation or triggering allergies, it is excellent for use in facial care products.  Last but not least, jojoba oil has a high beneficial mineral content and lots of tocopherols (Vitamin E).  Vitamin E is known for promoting healthy skin.
